What do we think about dupes?

More affordable companies making cheaper alternatives to higher end products is nothing new, however this whole ‘dupes borderlining rip off’ is something that is very big nowadays. Let me just show you these pictures and think about what you see

The first picture is off Aldi’s Facebook page and the second and third pictures are the Pixi Glow Tonic and the Sand&Sky Brilliant Skin Mask. That is insane how similar the products are!! Not even mentioning how the names are very similar and the concepts are identical, however will the formulas be anywhere near the same? With that big of a price difference probably not especially when it comes to skin care. Take the Pixi Glow Tonic and the Lacura Healthy Glow Toner, there is a £14 price difference but that amount per bottle will contribute towards the better ingredients. Looking into both ingredients they are very similar, they have the same key ingredients and they both contain not so natural ingredients. Regardless whether they do the same thing or not is it morally or even legally okay to rip of a companies concept, packaging, name and ingredients list? I feel like this is a grey area when it comes to the law due to trademarking, companies have to provide extra evidence that their product packaging is unique or only relatable to their company for a trademark to occur, and if their packaging is easy to make or is very generic they aren’t likely to be able to trademark it as their own. So this will lead to companies having no legal leg to stand on when situations like this one occurs. The dupe companies aren’t creating ‘counterfeit’ products so technically they are not breaking any trademark laws, they are able to use any generic packaging or concept and create the dupe community.

Another brand which I feel like do this are Revolution Beauty (formally known as Makeup Revolution), they released an eyeshadow palette called the “Light and Shade Eyeshadow Palette” which was very similar to the Kat Von D “Shade and Light Eyeshadow Palette“, Kat Von D then took to her YouTube channel to show all the hard work she put into her products for them then to be ‘ripped off’ from her. Were Revolution wrong to do that? To take a high end product and create it in their own formula at a cheaper price? I would say yes and no.

As someone who isn’t into high end make up and wants to save my money to spend on my family, friends, significant other or things which enrich my life I cannot justify spending £37 on a very basic eyeshadow like the Kat Von D one, and with Revolution selling a very similar product but for £29 less I am more likely to go with the Revolution one. Brands like Revolution who make affordable dupes for higher end makeup as well as their own products are something which is growing and was wanted within the beauty community, it allowed people with less money to not feel like they were less than others for not having a disposable budget on beauty products because they could have similar products for a price they could afford. However I can see Kat Von D’s side of it, that company will have put a lot of money and time into their designs and formula for another brand to see it and copy it, that can be quite disheartening especially for smaller brands who are trying to get their products out there. I feel like there is no real answer for this, it’s all down to your personal opinion. In the eyes of the law this duping trend is allowed as it is not exactly infringing any trademarking laws however morally it can be a bit blurred.

I personally believe that companies making more affordable alternatives to high end or luxury products is great because it removes the elitism of the beauty community and allows people to express themselves at a price they can afford with a higher level of quality. But if you are a big company just ripping off another companies idea or product then you are not doing it the right way, you are giving yourself a negative reputation.

I would love to know what you guys think? Do you think it is just ripping off someone else’s hard work? Or do you think it is giving the people what they want for cheaper?

  1. Wow another great post Alex! This is another one where I have to stop and think and realize there are actually two sides to a topic hahah! I totally agree with what you said above. If I were a company I would not be too happy if someone went and made a cheaper alternative because I feel like many would flock to the cheaper ones. BUT as a poor AF hobo like myself, I appreciate having those cheaper alternatives. It’s difficult but I guess it depends on where you stand. I’m not a beauty / brand maker so for me it’s okay!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment and you’re feedback it is very much appreciated. Yeah it is a tough one and something I was thinking about when I saw that picture of the Aldi version of things. I bloody love them because #brokestudentlife but I can see why they cause problems. Just some food for thought really!

    1. Yeah I think that’s a really valid point, you pay for what you’re getting but sometimes you can really find some gems! I’ve found my £4 Revolution palette blends so much better than my £49 Too Faced Palette. It just depends on how much you’re willing to work with the products. Thank you so much for your comment x

    1. It’s actually really great, I’ve been using it for a while now because I don’t want to pay £19 for the Pixi one!

  2. Hmmm.. I never thought about it that way. Product dupes have been around for such a long time – I even noticed a trend where companies would slightly change the name of their product to sound closely to a popular product, just so people can purchase it. Which is weird.
However, another way to look at it – they’re a lot of higher-end makeup brands who are selling their products for a higher price not because it has better ingredients- but because of the notoriety of their brand name alone. There’s a name for this concept – I forgot what it’s called – but people tend to view higher priced items as more “valuable” – which may not always be the case (or the duping business would not exist, right?).

    1. That’s a really interesting point, yeah I think some people just assume that because they’re paying more money that they will just get a better product! I think it’s more dependant on the company and their morals/ethics/budget for better (more expensive) ingredients. Thank you for your comment and your feedback, it’s something so small yet still so interesting

  3. Definitely an interesting topic Alex. I don’t know where I stand 100%. I’m with you that I like to save money, especially on beauty products but I can understand the business side of both views.

    1. Yeah it is strange. Would I rather save my money or give moral support to the creators of an original idea. I think if it’s a similar concept but a cheaper version I will buy it but if it is a complete rip off I will feel less likely to support that brand. Like the whole Huda Beauty/Beauty Bakerie drama, if you saw that? Thanks for the comment and for giving your thoughts on the topic!

  4. I’m a firm believer in you get what you pay for! When it comes to skin care and foundation, I spend more money to get the higher end product. When it comes to things like eye shadow and mascara I get the cheaper knock offs. I think that $8 for mascara is more than enough!!!

    1. Yeah I totally get that, I think for your skin you should pay more money to protect it. I think at this moment in my life I’m only able to pay so much money on certain things so that limits my choices really. Yeah I wouldn’t pay more than that for mascara really! Thank you for your comment and I appreciate your feedback and thoughts x

  5. This is such an interesting post! I personally have used high end and drugstore beauty products and honestly, as someone who’s not too much into makeup, I just don’t see much difference! I did see what Revolution makeup did with the whole eyeshadow dupes thing, like they brought out these pelletes that looked exactly like the ABH ones. There was literally like over £30 difference in them and I just thought… Fair enough. Because over £40 for some eyeshadow for someone that wants to dress up a bit but isn’t particularly too invester?? Sure.

    1. Thank you so much for reading and for your feedback. Yeah there isn’t a whole lot of different for some brands, I mean it’s always rumoured that some brands are all produced in the same factory so👀 I bought the £4 dupe of the Soft Glam palette and I’m telling you now it’s 10000x better than the Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette I own which is about £39!! It’s something to think about especially when you’re supporting brands, do you support the multi million companies who give it to you cheaper or smaller brands who work their arses of to create great products. Who knows😂

  6. Hmmm, for me its case by case. For example, I would pick Pixie’s formula over a generic dupe because I know and trust that brand. But when it comes to the other example Kat Von D, I don’t support her or her brand anymore so if I was absolutely dying to get basic shades, I would obviously go for a cheaper dupe. To me, dupes seem lazy BUT, BUT! I think makeup needs to be affordable to all, and if dupes allow those with a lower income to still have access to beauty, then I’m all for it when its brands that are not going to be dangerous to put on their face.

    1. Yeah I really do agree with you! Thank you for your comment and your feedback. That’s true, it should all be safe and there should be more affordable options for everyone to use!

  7. This was a really thought provoking post. I never really stopped to think about whether dupes were/weren’t okay before. I think they can be really nice and useful for people on a tighter budget like you mentioned but I also feel like there’s a quality difference that makes me edgy. I’ve heard of dupe products using things that are horrible for the skin as filler – not that every dupe does this but it does raise the question of what you’re getting when you buy one. Great post, I’ll be thinking more about this one later!

    1. It is something that has no right or wrong answer so it is something you can think about more. Morally they can be questionable but I like having the affordable version of a product. I prefer it they don’t blatantly rip off the product but take on the concept with a a bit of subtlety. I wouldn’t usually go for skin care dupes but I don’t always see the problem with make up dupes. Thanks for your comment and for your feed back!

  8. I think this is such a tricky subject, and I understand both sides of the story. However, being someone who hasn’t got a lot of money, I’m grateful to the companies that make these cheaper products available

  9. Hey Alex! I just wanted to say this post is super awesome – love the amount of depth you go to on the subject, particularly because I’ve never actually seen a blog post discussing dupes that had me questioning the morality behind them. A really interesting perspective – thank you for sharing!

    1. Yeah that’s a really good point, if your product is at such a high price then it has to be the best quality it can be so that people won’t go to the more affordable competition. Great point and thank you so much for your comment x

  10. Brands making dupes of the products are okay but I think the design needs to be changed a little. I mean at least change the layout/ packaging! Still I do buy the dupes so I can’t complain too much!

  11. I think dupes need to exist for people who can’t afford the real thing. because let’s face it, some people would rather spend £40 or so on food and not splurge it on makeup. Then again, important thing is having some creativity and coming up with original ideas and concepts – whether it’s a makeup product itself or the packaging of the product. I think drugstore brands are slacking when it comes to this. It’s been a while since I went to superdrug or boots and went wow this is totally original. But then again, I think research costs money.

    1. Yeah I really agree with you, the brands should be focussing on creating their own amazing stuff instead of copying someone else’s. They wouldn’t need the clout of another brand if they were being innovative and giving people what they really want. However it is great to have a cheaper version of a high end product so you can have the experience of that product for the price point you can afford. Thank you for your comment and your feedback!

  12. Great post! I had never really thought about the business perspective and how there’s a grey area. I think as a consumer, I really prioritize my needs and have always assumed that the company offering lower prices was just trying to be competitive. It’s so interesting to consider the timing of products and the legality of being too similar, and that the lower prices aren’t always 100% ethical or all about the consumer needs.

P.S., I love your graphics! They are so eye-catching and charming.

    1. Thank you so much I really appreciate it! Yeah it is something so small yet so interesting to think about. Hopefully I can get to a place where I can afford the higher end product so I can support the original idea. Thanks for your comment x
