Recently I came across a series on the Teen Vogue YouTube channel called “The Playlist of my Life” and I have binge watched them all. It inspired me to think about what songs I would put on the playlist of my life and explain to you all why each one is so significant
These are in no particular order and some have some much more meaningful messages but right now this is the songs which I feel are the playlist of my 20 years of life.
Jesus of Suburbia by Green day is a song which means a lot to me for multiple reasons. First of all when I started learning guitar it was one of the first songs I learnt and I just loved it. The vibe, the changes throughout it and the lyrics is just amazing and timeless to me. It’s also a song my cousin and I used to rock out to when we felt a little less than amazing, it is a song that we both love and can sing at the top of our voices without fail. It represents my teen angst and the anger I felt towards people when I was a teen.
Like I’m gonna lose you by Meghan Trainor and John Legend is a song which has brought me to tears multiple times and continues to do so. This song is something which I came across randomly on Spotify in the middle of the night when I was at one of my lowest places and it really put things into perspective. When I felt so low about myself and therefore all of my relationships I heard these words and realised I can’t just take everyone for granted and that I have to love myself and others like I’m going to lose them. It gave me the push to fight for my relationship and better myself that I needed.
Wish you were here by Pink Floyd is a song with the most meaning to me for multiple reasons. First of all it’s my dads favourite song and if you read my My response to the Approachable Podcast “what choices made you who you are” episode post you will see how much my dad means to me. Secondly I learnt it on guitar for my dads wedding and surprised him by playing it which was a really special moment for me. It’s also a song he wants played at his funeral and so it means so much to him. It’s a beautiful song and each time I listen to it I find more meanings and messages in it.
Beautiful by Eminem is a song I listened to in the middle of the night when I felt like shit and needed support. Its a song with an important message and attitude and I loved it so much throughout my teen years and so it means a lot to me. You can feel the pain behind the words but also the inspiration it projects. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it now.
Speechless by Naomi Scott from the Aladdin soundtrack is the newest addition to the playlist of my life as it has only been released for a few months but it sums up me pretty well. The song is about princess jasmine being told to be quiet and that she is not worthy of speaking up or ruling and it’s her destroying that. It’s so powerful and it made me cry in the cinema watching it because it is how I’ve always felt. I have always been told to talk less or be less opinionated and I always say no. I am who I am and if God wanted me to be less of anything he would’ve made me that way so🤷🏼♀️ It is also a song which I am so happy so many young girls can listen to and feel empowered by. It’s a message I always want to inspire and teach young girls and women because we don’t have to be quiet or speechless because we are strong and worthy of speaking up.
For Good by Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel on the Wicked Soundtrack is a song which is so important to me. Firstly it is my all time favourite musical and my favourite soundtrack to exist so it is an amazing song on there about friendship, love and loss. It is also a song which I quoted in my speech at my beloved Nan’s funeral because it summed up how I felt. It was a song the day before she died I listened to and thought I need to share it with her, I sent her the link and she loved it then the next day she passed. The Lord put it on my heart to share it with her and so I knew I had to share it at the funeral with my and her family. The quote I used was “Well it may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime, so let me say before we part so much of me is made of what I’ve learned from you. You’ll be with me like a hand print on my heart and now whatever way our stories end I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend.” and it just means so so much to me.
Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield is a song which has less meaningful but more of a song which I adore. Like it makes me so happy and I just sing and dance to it every time it comes on. I just love it so much and so does Jack so we just party to it all the time.
Rainbow by Kesha is a song (and an album) which is so beautiful in content and in meaning, it is a song which makes me cry and also happy and empowered. The song talks about finding a sign of good after a stormy part of light which ends up being a rainbow. This was after all of the horrendous events which she experienced and the album is her breaking out of her chains and it is one of my all time favourites. I just adore it.
Life is a highway is a song which reminds me of the kids I look after as we sing it all the time especially on road trips. It’s just a real feel good song and it makes me smile so much. I have a specific playlist for the youngest as he’s very particular to what he likes to listen to and it just makes me smile. It reminds me of how awesome my job is sometimes.
